Today, I joined rescue and it was bittersweet.
I had been picked up by animal control after I was found wandering around town. I did have a family and they knew I was in the shelter because they called looking for me. The shelter staff confirmed I was there and my family said they were coming to get me!
I got excited because the barking in the shelter was out of control. And I was ready to go. After several days in the shelter, I realized that the shelter life was no life for me!
Every time the door opened, I jumped up thinking it was my family. But it never was. After a while, I realized they were not coming for me.
When it was my day to go, my friends at the shelter called rescue and today was my day to start my brand-new life.
First stop was the pet store. YAY! For a bath. Boo.
The rescue wagon ladies said I didn’t smell like roses. Thinking back, I’m not sure if I’ve ever had a bath. Everything seemed so strange to me. I jumped, hopped and twirled in a circle. I barked and then I cried. I shook and tried to crawl.
In the end, I accepted the fact that I was having a bath and when I accepted that, it really wasn’t that bad after all. I had no use for the blow dryer, so I chose to air dry.
The best part of the day was when I got to walk around the store. It was like a dog’s paradise. I saw more dog stuff, I sampled a lot of treats, picked out a new collar and leash and chose my own bed.
This thing called “rescue” is really pretty sweet. I met so many people at the pet store who told me I was beautiful, wanted to pet me and some even tried to take me home.
I tried to go home with a woman and her poodle because she had a cart full of canned dog food, a big bag of kibble and her poodle was wearing clothes! I thought, “You know, Rio… you would look good in clothes!” Needless to say, the poodle duo were not so taken with me.
So here I am, rescue friends. I’ll soon be having a little surgery and then I’ll be looking for a family who will never leave me hanging again.
7/9/22 Update: It’s been an interesting first week for all of us. Ruidoso is a handful! We were worried about him adjusting to all of us and his foster brothers at first, because he was full of so much energy, but he’s doing much better. He’s calmed down quite a bit.
He loves his foster brother, Samson. They are buds. His other foster brother hasn’t warmed up to him yet. We will see how that goes.
He is learning what NO means. And he can sit and shake…. welll, he’s done it once so far.
He got a new bone today, which he’s pretty stoked about.
He snores like a grown man! No kidding. Will have to video that for next time! But when he sleeps all night long and then some… can’t complain.
7/19/22 Update: If you are looking for a lazy, chunky butt Bulldog…. this is NOT your guy! He is full of energy! And floppy, clumsy and silly.
He is curious and wants to know what you’re doing or sit on your lap or head, whichever… he doesn’t care.
And he’s just the sweetesr. He always wants to please you.
He’s definitely all puppy and needs someone to pay attention to him and teach him all the things a good dog should do. He wants to do ALL the things!
7/25/22 Update: Rio is still a crazy kid and full of energy! He’s also as sweet as can be. He’s mastered how to shake perfectly and mastered how to give you those puppy dog “I’m sorry” eyes. Pretty sure he has sweet talked his second foster brother, Dexter, to warm up to him a little bit. Theyy had a little play session today for the first time. Rio is 10 times Dexter’s size, so he took it real easy on him. Rip enjoys playing tug of war with his foster brother Samson and stealing bones.
8/3/22 Update: Rio has adjusted well in his foster home and is stealing hearts everywhere. He has a few favorites in the house and makes sure to give them extra slobbery attention. He is so ready to find his furever family! Here are a few pics of him poolside and chillin” in the A/C with his foster bro.
9/8/22 Update: Rio is doing so well. When getting his treats he’s the most gentle guy ever. He’s always ready to please and shake your hand! Never met a stranger and just loves everyone!
This kiddo is excited to meet his forever family! Someone needs this sweet guy in their life!
